Tawau: The Home Ministry will build five control posts in Sabah to tackle the issue of illegal immigrants (PATI) entering the state via secret land routes, said its Minister, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, Thursday.
He said the posts would be built in Tawau-Kunak, Kalabakan-Pengsingan, Sandakan-Telupid, Papar-Beaufort and Sipitang-Tenom roads.
"PATI is a national issue and it must be tackled wisely.
The building of control posts at the land route areas are among the steps taken to prevent the PATI from entering the State," he told reporters after attending a security briefing at the Tawau District police headquarters, here.
He said it was learnt that there were about 89,000 illegal immigrants in the State and the Government was looking at a humanitarian approach to deal with the matter.
